Abstract

Anesthetics or sedatives in aquaculture are necessary for sedation, immobilization of fish and prolonged transport. MS-222, benzocaine and 2- phenoxyethanol (2-PE) are the most widely used anesthetics in nowadays. However, residues of these chemicals have adverse effects on human and animal health. For this reason, it does not make any residue in fish, well tolerated by fish, short-duration excreted from the body and therefore natural products that are safer for human beings and animals are needed. In this review, the anesthetic effects on several fish species of different medicinal plant used in aquaculture are discussed.
