Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of age factor in language acquisition and foreign language learning. The study begins with an examination and comparison of the theoretical and experimental studies within the framework of foreign language learning. The most basic debate on age factor is whether there is a critical period in language acquisition. Those who support critical period ignore the other factors in foreign and second language learning and assert that a foreign language cannot be learnt completely after adolescence. Those who are against this hypothesis focus on the personal, environmental and communicational factors rather than age. Another view defends that the most decisive factor in language learning is the language learning atmosphere. Children and adults have different advantages in language learning. Children acquire phonetics of a foreign language better and faster. Teenagers and adults can acquire the morphology and syntax of the foreign language easily, due to their cognitive development. In conclusion, age factor is not the only deciding factor. A foreign language can be learnt at any age. However, implementing suitable learning and teaching strategies for the properties of age will increase students’success.

Her yaşta yabancı dil öğrenilebilir.
