Abstract

The subject of this research is the traditional rural dwellings contains the Middle and Lower Botan Valley and its vicinity in the Southeast Anatolian Region, Siirt Province and the northeaster tip of the Dicle Basin. Today, there are 9621 inhabitants in the Middle and Lower Botanic Valley, where 30 are villages, 4 are hamlets and 34 are permanent rural settlements. In this study, the distribution of the 34 rural settlements in the Botan Valley was analysed by a geographical point of view. The structure and characteristics of the traditional dwellings of the mentioned settlements were examined with relation to the natural environment conditions. In addition, the present and future situation of the traditional rural dwelling in the field has been evaluated in terms of sustainability. In general, the area dwellings can be classified into two types, traditional and modern. Modern concrete dwellings in terms of building material with briquettes and bricks with a share close to 66% are in the first place. The traditional stone dwellings with binding mortar clay soil and cas have a ratio of 34%. These settlements are in the second place. On the other hand, the traditional rural dwellings, which reflect the natural and economic geographical conditions very well and contain extremely rich items in terms of cultural geography, have left the place with a single modern structure which is not worthy of modern and culturally. The decreasing number of these traditional rural dwellings are in danger of complete extinction in the near future, which may lead to the disappearance of cultural values that best reflect the local conditions.
