Abstract

This study aims to reveal the views of Plotinus and Al-Kindi, two philosophers from different cultures and faiths, through their own lenses on how to comprehend the creature they both refer to as “One” within a philosophical history. In doing so, both Plotinus and Al-Kindi’s own epistles were considered. Also, by presenting the views of some who came before Plotinus the phases the concept “one” passed through are addressed. On the other hand, it is a topic of discussion whether or not Al- Kindi, who’s considered as the first philosopher in Islamic philosophy, was influenced by Plotinus. Particularly the mistake al-Kindi made by requesting a translation of the IV-VI chapters of Plotinus’ Ennades book with the wrong title – Aristotle’s Theologia- led the way to interaction between the two philosophers. Within this context, Kindi was influenced by philosophers such as Platon, Aristotle, Phytagoras which can be clearly seen in his epistles. However, Kindi was also influenced by values of her own culture. From this aspect, Kindi was not influenced by Plotinus’ emanation theory although there are several claims related to how creatures emerged but he accepted the creation theory. Also, accepting Vahiy as a way to obtain knowlegde is important for Kindi in terms of revealing his difference.
