Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine students' experiences gained from the engineering design process and to reveal the effects of engineering activities on the students' interest in the engineering fields through the Prosthetic Tails and Bioplastic units in the Engineering Everywhere curriculum. Sixth grade female students (n = 30) from a religious middle school considered as disadvantaged in Kucukcekmece district of Istanbul participated in the study. Both quantitative (scales and efficacy evaluation forms) and qualitative (observation forms and interviews) data collection tools were used. Findings indicated that the students (a) experienced the engineering design processes; (b) gained knowledge and experience about the engineering profession; (c) had positive interests and attitudes towards engineering; (d) had positive views on the engineering design process and activities. In conclusion, access to engineering activities in a disadvantaged school ensured equal opportunity for the students.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Her Yerde Mühendislik öğretim programında yer alan Protez Kuyruklar ve Biyoplastik üniteleri aracılığıyla öğrencilerin mühendislik tasarım sürecinden edindikleri deneyimleri ve mühendislik etkinliklerinin öğrencilerin mühendislik alanlarına ilişkin ilgilerine etkisini ortaya çıkarmaktır. Çalışmaya İstanbul ili Küçükçekmece ilçesindeki dezavantajlı kabul edilen bir imam hatip ortaokulundan 6. sınıf kız öğrencileri (n=30) katılmıştır. Çalışmada nicel (ölçekler ve etkinlik değerlendirme formları) ve nitel (gözlem formları ve görüşmeler) veri toplama araçlarından yararlanılmıştır. Bulgular, öğrencilerin (a) mühendislik tasarım süreçlerini deneyimlediğini; (b) mühendislik mesleği hakkında bilgi ve tecrübe edindiğini; (c) mühendislik alanına yönelik olumlu ilgi ve tutumlara sahip olduğunu; (d) mühendislik tasarım süreci ve etkinliklere yönelik görüşlerinin olumlu olduğunu göstermektedir. Dezavantajlı okulda mühendislik etkinliklerine erişebilir olmanın öğrencilere bir fırsat sağladığı düşünülmektedir.
