Terminolojik olarak kökenini yapı kavramından alan, parçaların bir araya gelmesiyle bütünü ifade eden bu düşünce akımının en önemli kurucusu LeviStrauss’dur. Ortak payda olarak yapısalcılık, salt antropoloji bilimiyle sınırlı olmamakta felsefeden edebiyata, matematikten sanata kadar hemen hemen tüm alanlarda kendini hissettiren bir anlayış biçimi olmuştur. Levi-Strauss diğer düşünürlerin aksine, yapısalcılık yaklaşımına farklı bir anlayış getirerek bu kuramı antropolojiye uyarlamış ve bu konuda dil biliminin ve psikanalizin uygulamalarından faydalanmıştır. Söz konusu çalışmada, yapısalcılık ve LeviStrauss’un yapısalcılık yaklaşımı (yapısal antropoloji) tüm yönleriyle analiz edilmeye çalışılmıştır
