Abstract

Modernization efforts on the Ottoman lands which concentrated following mainly 1839 Tanzimat event, brought up more robust and fast modernization effects on the Cyprus Turkish community than those living on Anatolia. It should not be underestimated that British administrative rule on the island following the political and military developments in 1878 is another key role for that. Thus Britain, which benefited from the Ottoman defeats against Russia planned to have the island and brought bids to Ottoman Sultan that both states could go into an alliance against Russia. Ottoman State accepted this bid and ceded the sovereignty of the island to Britain with an agreement signed on 4 June 1878. Therefore it is possible to mention that there was a more liberal-democratic social structure on Cyprus than the one on Anatolia at the beginning of 20th century related to the political, social and cultural reasons such as Cyprus is an island and away from Anatolian peninsula, the island ruled under British sovereignty after 1878, this affected the local island administration to become more independent than Ottoman central administration, Turkish Cypriot society has a more secular-modernist character than the folks of Anatolia and finally 1908 Revolution of Liberty. The main aim of this study is to examine the democratic social structure observed among the Turkish Cypriots at the beginning of the 20th century and how it affected the social life and thus mass psychology of the Turkish society on the island by surfing through Niyazi Berkes’ memoirs, a famous Turkish intellectual and sociologist born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1908.
