Abstract

The debate on what is the relationship between the public expenditures and economic growth has taken a long time. In contrast to the most of the relevant empirical studies, starting point of the basic assumption that effect of interest payments which have a significant share in the transfer payments may be different from other transfers, in this study it has been tested that relationship between total public expenditures, current expenditures, public investments, interest payments, other transfers and economic growth. In this study, Engle-Granger co-integration test and Granger causality test had been used within the framework of time series techniques for the period 1980-2010 in Turkey. Accordingly, it is found that all other variables except for interest payments have a long-term relationship with economic growth and that there is a unilateral relationship from current expenditures and total public expenditures to economic growth.
