Abstract

Ali Suavi whom many scientific studies have been conducted, has written many books and articles, newspaper columns, remarkable sermons, and conversations in his relatively short life and led the publication of various newspapers such as Muhbir and Ulum in the country and abroad, and was revolutionary enough to attempt to change the power and partisan enough to risk losing his life by organizing people in a short time. Although his father was illiterate, he educated himself very well with the support and contributions of his mother. He was equipped enough to preach to the statesmen at the Hagia Sophia and Şehzadebaşı Mosques, especially on theological issues, and to extract the repeated hadiths in Salih-i Bukhari. He was a thinker who, compared to his other colleagues and contemporaries, based his views most on theology, produced and wrote ideas in almost all socio-economic areas, from education to economics, from foreign policy to accounting education, from interest to the creation of a new state in Africa. Although Ali Suavi, upon being discovered by the British, is said to have been used as an agent with the help and support of his British wife and of prominent British thinkers of the time so as to ensure the rapprochement of the Ottoman Empire to the British and especially to facilitate the handover of Cyprus to the British, and even though he is said to have been a British agent because of these characteristics, it would still be difficult to claim that he was turned into an obedient slave, or in other words, into a “mankurt”.
