Abstract

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the results of rigid bronchoscopy performed in children with suspected foreign body aspiration.Materials and Methods: The data of 38 patients who underwent rigid bronchoscopy in Şişli Etfal Training and Research Hospital Pediatric Surgery Clinic between December 2005 and May 2007 were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Twenty-two of the patients were male and 16 of them females. The age range was 6-80 months (average 26 months). Physical examination revealed the most frequent reduction in breathing sounds on the same side and bilateral ral. The majority of foreign bodies consisted of organic foreign bodies and aspiration to the right side was higher. The most frequent finding on plain chest radiography and tomography was the hyperaeration on the aspiration side. Luminal obstruction was detected in all cases by virtual bronchoscopy. All objects were removed by rigid bronchoscopy. We did not lose any patients during and after the procedure. Conclusion: Foreign body aspirations are a common problem between 1-3 years of age. Early diagnosis and treatment are important. Multislice Computed Tomography and virtual bronchoscopy are very useful for diagnosis in suspicious cases and reduce unnecessary rigid bronchoscopy.
