Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the diagnoses identified in the care plans and the adequacy of the data collected to make diagnoses during clinical practice among second year nursing students. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted at the nursing school of a university. The sample of the research consisted of a total of 98 care plans prepared by second year nursing students in the Spring Term of 2013-2014 Academic Year. The data were collected using the Functional Health Pattern data collection form and the nursing care plans prepared by the students. The accuracy of the diagnoses identified in the care plans and the adequacy of the data for diagnosing were evaluated by a 12-item form designed by the researchers. Results: In the 98 care plans prepared by the students, a total of 591 nursing diagnoses were analyzed and it was determined that there were 66 different diagnoses. According to NANDA-I Taxonomy II, 80.2% (n=474) of the diagnoses were accurate and that the data were adequate for 74.6% (n=441) of the diagnoses. Conclusion: It is a pleasing fact that second year students had a high rate of establishing accurate diagnosis in their first clinical practice. However, the fact that diagnoses were identified without adequate data and that medical diagnoses, symptoms and findings were identified as nursing diagnoses should be emphasized. Therefore, nurse educators should guide students in the phases of data collection, data analysis and diagnosis.
