Abstract

During the occupation of Istanbul, which started with the acceptance of the last Ottoman Parliament, the parliament first stopped its activities. Then the Ottoman Parliament was dissolved by the sultan. In the face of this situation, the Anatolian movement led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha decided to open a new parliament in Ankara. With the circular published on March 19, 1920, elections were held throughout the country. The Turkish Grand National Assembly was opened with the participation of both elected and deputies from Istanbul to Ankara from the last Ottoman Parliamentary Assembly. The political developments in the period between the occupation of Istanbul and the opening of parliament on 23 April 1920 accelerated the process leading to the Republican regime in the country. In this study, the aforementioned process has been examined.
