Abstract

This research examines the importance of some program characteristics for parents choosing the current kindergarten and pre-kindergarten programs for their children. It also investigates whether the degree of importance varied by child's gender, educational levels and work hours of mothers and fathers, numbers of children families have and the birth order of the child. The findings show that the reliability is the most important characteristics of the program. This is followed by cleanness and order of the program and educational activities. Cost is the least important aspect of the program. Hours of the program is more important for working mothers group than it is for nonworking mothers group. For the non-working mother group, educational materials, educational level of the teachers and physical condition of the program are less important if fathers' work hours are between 7:00 and 18:00 than if fathers' work hours fall in the hours other than 7:00-18:00. For the working mothers group, the location and reliability of the program was more important if mother's educational level is higher than high school. Location of the program and recommendation of the program by somebody they know or knowing the program staff are more important, and physical condition of the program is less important for the parents who had one or two children than for the parents who had three children.
