Abstract

Conformism, also known as conformity, which describes the adaptation of one’s behaviors and thoughts into the majority without external imposition, belongs under social psychology. Although it has a positive outlook that promotes unity and solidarity through the use of we-feeling, it is inherently a negative phenomenon with its nature threatening individuality and restricting freedom. Moreover, conformism has a nature that undermines the riches such as spontaneity, originality, ability, and moral courage, resulting in the banalization and anonymization of individuals among the crowds. While conformism can be internalized without any external impacts, it can be sometimes taken on necessarily in order to get rid of the external threats for individuals such as exclusion, abasement and excommunication. This is rather a state to be interpreted as a defense mechanism. Taking conformism over whether willingly or compulsorily enforces carrying the can on people. Since one building his own reality with his choices, decisions and actions is also supposed to take responsibility for the path he has chosen. All the chosen lives have their own set of laws, ways of thinking and actions in themselves which no one has the authority to abnegate. In recent years, millions of people have experienced the most tragic one with National Socialism. Millions of people putting Hitler into power carried the can by confessing to live the imposed lives leading to the false selves and being not themselves anymore. The current study aims to ascertain the projections of conformism that arose as an issue of freedom and defined the way of thinking and acting of the people of the National Socialism period – sometimes willingly and sometimes compulsorily – within Hotel Berlin authored by Vicki Baum

Hitler’i iktidara taşıyan milyonlar bunun bedelini kendilerine dayatılan yaşamı dolayısıyla sahte benliklerle, kendi olamadan yaşamayı kabullenerek ödemiştir. Bu çalışmada, bir özgürlük sorunu olarak ortaya çıkan ve Nasyonal Sosyalizm dönemi insanında kimi zaman gönüllü kimi zaman zorunlu düşünce ve eylem biçimini tanımlayan konformizmin Vicki Baum’um Berlin Oteli romanındaki izdüşümleri tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır.
