Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the important aspects and factors related to contract manufacturing, to understand the role of manufacturers in the global supply chain.Seven contracted manufacturers with in-depth interviews, evaluated brand development, design, procurement, training, R&D, quality control and inspection issues, and their opinions were received. Later, in-depth interview results were given with direct quotations. Purposeful sampling was used to select the participants. The data were collected through face-to-face semi-structured interviews with seven senior executives under contract. Interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed and coded. Firm sizes vary from 220 workers to 1240 workers. It was stated that training contracted producers, investing in employees and university-industry cooperation are very important. Contract manufacturers' branding depends on their goal and their ability to pursue growth targets. In order to overcome the risks such as the loss of control over the product in contract manufacturing, companies need to create their own brands and gradually increase the contract manufacturing to a certain level. The limitation of this study is that the research was conducted only in the industrial zone of Kahramanmaraş, and only these sectors were researched since the contracted producers in this region were concentrated in the fields of steel pots, rope knitting and textile. The main issues that companies face and should be concerned with when choosing contract manufacturers, and the barriers to brand development by contracted manufacturers are discussed. There are very few studies in Turkish on contract manufacturing in the literature.
