Abstract

Purpose: The fundamental objective of thisstudy is to determine the depression levels andto review its relations with serum cortisollevels in cases presenting with fibromyalgia(FM).Materials and Methods: Seventy one patientsparticipated in this study who referred tophysiotherapy department, and approved toparticipate in this study, and they werediagnosed with FM by physiotherapistsaccording to American RheumatologyAssociation and they were referred topsychiatry department, afterwards. Therelevant data were obtained by filling the testforms such as socio-demographic dataacquisition form and Beck DepressionInventory. The control group was consistedwith 39 healthy individuals. To determine thelevels of the cortisol, the blood samples weretaken between 08.00 am-09.00 am from thepatients and the control group that match withthe study criteria. Results: In this study, mild depression wasdetected in 63,2% of the participants. Serumcortisol average of individuals in patient groupand control group was found as 10.10 ± 4.08цg/dL and 11.78 ± 3.6 цg/dL.Conclusion: In this study, serum cortisol levelsof fibromyalgia patients was significantlylower than levels of healthy control patients. However, there was no significant associationbetween the levels of cortisol and depression. This study show that necessity to psychiatricevaluation in treatment of patients with FM.
