Abstract

Embracing Bolman and Deal’s (2003) four frames model (structural, political, human resource, and symbolic), this study examines the leadership orientations of academic leaders working in one of the foundation universities in Turkey and aims to understand their views on academic leadership through their own experiences. This is a case study where the data was collected qualitatively by the use of face-to-face interviews and semi-structured interview guidelines. The participants were composed of 20 academic leaders (6 deans, 9 vice deans, 3 institute directors, 2 assistant directors) working in one of the foundation universities located in Istanbul. The data was analyzed through descriptive and content analysis based on the four frames model developed by Bolman and Deal (2003). Findings revealed that the political and human resource frames are the most frequently employed frames by the deans and institute directors while the structural and human resource frames are the most frequently employed frames by the vice deans and assistant directors. In general, symbolic frame emerged as the least frequently employed frame while the human resource frame emerged as the most frequently employed frame. The study also showed that academic leaders generally use only two frames in combination and rarely use combination of three or four. Apart from the titles, the findings also indicated that the leadership orientations of academic leaders may change with respect to their academic field, years of experience in administration, gender, and age.
