Abstract

Elastic stability and free vibrations of circular plates with parabolically varying thickness -as a special case of elliptical plates- are investigated. Plates are assumed to be linearly elastic, homogeneous, Isotropie and clamped at the edges. Governing equations of the mathematical model are given as both differential equation and integral equation in Cartesian coordinates. While the differential equation formulation is solved by Galerkin method, the one given in integral equation form is solved by a well-known energy method called Rayleigh-Ritz technique. In order to test the accuracy of the numerical methods used and the validity of the results obtained, first free vibration and elastic buckling problems of circular plates with constant thickness are solved and then the numerical results are compared with the ones found in the literature. Plate thickness is considered to be of suitable form for the clamped case and volumes of all the plates are equalised to unity as well. Therefore, it is possible to compare the fundamental frequency parameter and the critical buckling load parameter of all plates with each other. Then, the effect of parabolically varying thickness on fundamental frequency parameter and critical buckling load parameter is investigated. Finally, the effect of in-plane forces on free vibrations of circular plates with both constant and parabolically varying thicknesses is investigated. It is concluded that vibration characteristics of circular plates can be improved, although stability characteristics gradually deteriorate.
