Abstract

Pretreatment of softwood chips with lignin degrading fungi was carried out and its effect on polysulphide antraquinon kraft pulping (PSAQ) was studied. The pretreatment involved a 2-week incubation of Calabrian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) chips with two strains (CZ-3 and FP 90031-sp) of the white rot fungus Ceriporiopsis subvermispora. Focus was on the chemical liquor consumption during PSAQ pulping, kappa number, yield, beating performance and the physical strength properties of evolved handsheets. In general, the fungus was found to be suitable for biokraft pulping of Calabrian pine. Fungal treatment reduced the active alkali requirement up to 14 % and increased the total pulp yield up to 5 % with higher kappa number compared to the control. The two strains produced about the same results for beating performances of pulp, however and pretreated pulp was slightly resistant to beating. In terms of sheet properties, the quality of the resultant biopulp sheet strengths such as tensile, burst and tear was better than that of the control at the same freeness level. Thus, fungal pretreatment is advantageous for PSAQ kraft pulp.
