Abstract

Mortality rate is high in meningitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Although it is usually seen postneurosurgically or post-traumatically, rarely it can also be seen in the presence of underlying diseases (diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, etc.). In this paper, a case of staphylococcal meningitis and osteomyelitis is reviewed. The patient, a 46-year-old male, was admitted to Atatürk Training and Research Hospital for the first time 8.5 months ago after a traffic accident and was hospitalized because of multiple fractures and chronic renal failure in the Clinic of Orthopedics and Clinic of Internal Medicine, respectively, for a total of 6 months. One month before meningitis, for diagnosis of osteomyelitis, computed tomography guided biopsy was taken from the L2 vertebra. After his rehospitalization with the diagnosis of meningitis in the Clinic of Infectious Diseases of the same hospital, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from cerebrospinal fluid and left arm sinus tract cultures. For the treatment, vancomycin, rifampicin and meropenem were used for 6 weeks, and internal fixation in the left humerus was removed by the Clinic of Orthopedics. The patient was discharged from the hospital with cure of meningitis.
