Abstract

Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) theory is based on a single price law and based on the assumption that real exchange rates are constant in the long run. Especially in the post-Breton Woods period, with the exchange rate fuctuating, many economists have been working to test the validity of the SGP. The SGP approach has been brought back to the agenda by reason of the trade wars and protective policies, many countries, especially developing countries, encounter problems caused by high volatility in exchange rates. This study was conducted to investigate whether PPP is valid in particular Turkey’s economy. It is seen that linear and nonlinear unit root tests are used in studies where SGP approach is tested. Especially in recent years, it is seen that unit root tests using Fourier functions are used more widely. SGP validity of Turkey’s economy has been investigated by using real exchange rate (RDK) and Real effective exchange rate (REDK) datasets. Fourier type unit root tests (FKPSS, FGLS and FADF) were used in the analysis. According to the results obtained in both fxed form and fxed-trend form models, economy of Turkey in all three special unit root test has reached the conclusion that the SGP is not valid.
