Abstract

Intensive care units; are the treatment services of critical diseases that have the potential to induce a systemic inflammatory response, such as stress, sepsis, trauma, surgery and burns, which increase the nutritional requirements of the body. Enteral nutrition (EN) is preferred primarily for malnourished patients, and parenteral nutrition is preferred for patients whose oral intake is not possible. Due to its omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content, it inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-a, IL-1β and IL-6 and acts as an anti-inflammatory modulates the production of the cytokine IL-10. In recent years, several studies have investigated whether diets fortified with omega-3 are beneficial in Intensive care units patients in clinical conditions characterized by an elevated inflammatory response, such as sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and after major abdominal surgery. While many studies in intensive care patients argue that omega-3 consumption positively affects overall mortality, morbidity and length of stay in the intensive care unit, there are also studies that argue that it has no effect. In the light of all this information, it is aimed to determine the effects of omega-3 use in intensive care patients and to provide researchers with information for future studies. As a result, while the use of omega-3 in parenteral nutrition is supported in line with the data obtained and the recommendations of health authorities, bolus and high-dose omega-3 use in enteral nutrition is not recommended.
