Abstract

Objective: Vinorelbine is a new semisynthetic vinca alkaloid which has benn used in metastatic breast cancer patients recently. It may be effective in previously treated patients. Method: Vinorelbine and doxorubicin combination was administered to 41 breast cancer patients. Thirty five patients (85%) administered 2 or more cycles of chemotherapy were evaluated retrospectively. On days 1 and 8 vinorelbine 30 mg/m2 and doxorubicin 25 mg/m2 were administered. Administration was repeated every 21 days. Results: Patients had median 4 cycles (range 2-8), follow up period was median 10 months (range 3-21). Median age of patients was 48 years (range 28-72). Objective response was obtained in 4/7 patients in first line treatment group, in 4/25patients (1 complete remission) in second line treatment group, and in 1/3 patients in third line treatment group, totally objective response was obtained in 8 patients (22.8%). Five patients remained stable however in 22 patients progressive disease was observed. After treatment progression free survival time was median 8 months (range 3-18), overall survival time was 10 months (range 3-21). Venous irritation in 4 patients, hyperpigmentation of injection site in one patients lymphangitis in one patients, totally in 6 patients side effects related to injection were observed. Grade 3-4 neutropenia was detected in 21.4%. of patients. Conclusion: Vinorelbine and doxorubicin combination is tolerable treatment choice in metastatic breast cancer patients.
