Abstract

The levels of some cytokines were determined in 64 sera collected from 34 persons (13 male and 21 female) infected with Ascaris lumbricoides and 30 healthy controls (12 male, 18 female). Serum levels of TNF-$alpha$, IL-lß$beta$, IL-2R, IL6, and IL8 were determined by a solid-phase two site chemiluminescent enzyme immunometric assay, while IL-2, IL-4, and IL-10 levels were measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The cytokine, which was increased the most, was IL-2R with an elevated level in 88.23% of the subjects infected with Ascaris lumbricoides. This was followed by IL-2 and TNF-$alpha$ (85.29%), IL-6 (32.35%), IL-8 (20.58%), IL-l$beta$ and IL-4 (14.71%), and IL-10 (5.88%). The elevated ratios of TNF-$alpha$, IL-2, IL-2R and IL-6 levels were significantly different (p
