Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether basal metabolic rate was correlated with mobility level. Materials and Methods: Eighteen children with cerebral palsy (12 male, 6 female; mean age 8.9±3.4 years) were included in this study. Five were spastic quadriplegic, 5 were spastic diplegic, and 2 were spastic hemiplegic. Basal metabolic rates (BMR) of the participants were determined with Vmax 29c Sensormedics (USA) indirect calorimetry. In the same day, all were assessed using Gross Motor Functional Measurement and Gross Motor Functional Classification System. Results: Gross Motor Functional Measurement scores was correlated with BMR/kg (r=0.49, p=0.03). However, there was no statistically significant correlation between BMR/kg and Gross Motor Functional Classification System levels (p>0.05). Conclusion: Metabolic energy needs of children with cerebral palsy are correlated with their mobility levels.

Özet

Amaç: Biz bu çalışmada serebral palsili çocuk hastalarda bazal metabolik hız ile mobilite arasındaki olası ilişkiyi araştırdık.Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmaya 18 serebral palsili çocuk hasta (12 erkek, 6 kız; ortalama yaş 8,9±3,4) dahil edildi. Hastaların 5'i kuadriplejik, 5'i diplejik ve 8'i de hemiplejik tip serebral palsi idi. Hastaların bazal metabolizma hız ölçümleri bilgisayar destekli açık devre spirometri tekniği kullanılarak, Vmax 29c Sensormedics (USA) indirekt kalorimetri cihazı ile yapıldı. Aynı gün içinde çocuklar, Kaba Motor Fonksiyonel Ölçüm ve Kaba Motor Fonksiyonel Klasifikasyon Sistemi kullanılarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Kaba Motor Fonksiyonel Ölçüm ile kilogram başına düşen bazal metabolizma hızı değerleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı pozitif korelasyon vardı (r=0,49, p=0,03). Buna karşın, Kaba Motor Fonksiyonel Klasifikasyon Sistemi ile kilogram başına düşen bazal metabolizma hızı değerleri arasında anlamlı korelasyon yoktu (p>0,05). Sonuç: Serebral palsili çocukların metabolik enerji ihtiyaçları mobilite düzeylerine bağlı olarak değişiklik göstermektedir.
