Abstract

A study of 1578 blood cultures yielded 233 positive blood culture episodes, of which 60.9 % were of clinical significance, 18.02 % represented contamination, 13.3 % represented transient bacteremia. Of the total number of isolates, 51.3 % were Staphylococcus aureus, 9.8 % were Escherichia coli and 5.9 % were Brucella sp. It was concluded that, contaminants from clinically significant isolates should be identified on both laboratory and clinical grounds before initiation of antimicrobial treatment.
