Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effect of postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy on serum homocysteine malondialdehide vitamin B12, folic acid, apolipoproteinAl, apoliporproteinB and lipid profile. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted on menopause patients between September 1999 and May 2000 in Ege University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Postmenopausal patients were administered cyclic combination hormone replacement therapy (n=20) (2 mg/day of estradiol valerate for II days, followed by estradiol valerate, 2mg/day, and cyproterone acetate I mg/day, 10 days) or no therapy (n=20) in a randomized fashion. Serum parameters were measured at baseline and at the end of the 3 months of therapy. Results: Homocysteine level decreased and vitamin BI2 level increased significantly at the completion of the hormone therapy. Hormone replacement therapy produced no significant effect on serum folic acid and malondialdehide level. HDL cholesterol and apoliporotein AI levels were found to be increased in the study group. Conclusion: In addition to favorable effect on lipoprotein profile postmenoposal hormone replacement therapy produces beneficial effects on serum homocysteine and vitamin B12 levels.
