Abstract

Background and Design: Striae gravidarum (SG) is a common cosmetic concern for many pregnant women. SG has been reported to be associated with various factors but etiopathogenesis of SG is still not well understood. The aim of this study was to determine the prevelance of SG in primipara pregnant women and identify risk factors associated with SG. Material and Method: Two hundred and fifty six primipara women within 48 hour of delivery included in this study. After excluding systemic factors that may affect development of striae, all of the subjects were asked to record about eighteen variables. Each woman was inspected for the presence or absence of striae. Statistical significance was determined by the logistic regression analysis for the studied factors between groups with SG absent and present. Results: Eighty-four percentage (215 of 256) of women had striae. Low maternal age (p=0.023), education (p=0.0001), maternal pre-pregnancy and delivery body mass index (p=0.03, p=0.02), weight gain (p=0.02), birth weight of infant (p=0.032), polyhydramnios (p=0.0001), family history (p=0.002) and gestational week at delivery (p=0.003) were found to be related to SG. There was no association between SG and the remaining factors such as cream use, smoking, skin type, pre-pregnancy striae, gender of neonate and mode of delivery (p>0.05). Conclusion: It is concluded that risk factors such as maternal age, education, mother’s body mass index, weight gain, neonatal birth weight polyhydramnios, family history and gestational week are found to be related with development of SG in this study population.
