Abstract

This research aims to examine the unique life experiences of parents whose children have been taken to the residential care by their demands using the eco-systems theory. A qualitative research method was used. In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 parents who requested institutional care for their children between 2014 and 2016 from the Ankara Department of Family and Social Policies. Research findings indicated that parents’ perceptions on parenting were mostly shaped by general gender discourse, they saw themselves as inadequate, they considered residential care as a last resort, they went to residential care where they could not adequately cope with the problems, and their perceived social support was inadequate. Parents felt that giving their own children to residential care is a kind of ‘loss’ experience and they experienced specific grief reactions. Communication with their children is continuing. Measures for parents’ problem of child care must be protective and preventive and should be based on inter-agency cooperation. Protective social work interventions should be planned for the families of children in residential care. Parents who do not abuse or neglect their children and demand residential care only due to socioeconomic conditions should be prevented from leaving their children in the child care institutions.
