Abstract

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has been accepted as a one of the reference texts in teaching Turkish as a foreign language in our country as well as all over the world since published as a full text in 2001. In CEFR, four basic language skills traditionally named listening, speaking, reading, and writing in teaching Turkish as a foreign language have begun to be named under the activities of perception, production, and interaction. In the latest edition of the CEFR, published in 2020 as Companion Volume, the fourth language activity, mediation, was added and discussed in detail, and descriptive scales were developed for this activity type. For this reason, it is important to introduce this language activity, which is a new type of activity for teaching Turkish as a foreign language. In this review study, which was prepared by using the literature review method, it was aimed to compile and evaluate the studies on mediation activity and especially the publications of the Council of Europe in this context. Mediation activities within the scope of the study; a conceptual framework was drawn by examining under the titles of its definition, its relationship with other types of activities, the differences between mediation and translation, mediation models, mediation activities and strategies. The results of the study reveal that linguistic mediation activities are handled under seven headings: relaying specific information, explaining data, processing text, translating a written text, note-taking, expressing a personal response to creative texts, and analysis and criticism of creative texts.
