Abstract

Objective: To evaluate retinal nerve fiber thickness, retina thickness, and choroid thickness in patients with clinically inactive thyroidassociated ophthalmopathy. Material and Method: Sixty-two eyes of 31 patients who were diagnosed as thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy between January 2018 and January 2021 were included in the study. These were compared with 60 eyes of 30 healthy individuals as control group. Detailed ophthalmoscopic examination including best corrected visual acuity, biomicroscopic anterior and posterior segment examination, ophthalmoscopic examination and intraocular pressure measurement were performed too all eyes. The degree of proptosis was determined with Hertel exophthalmometer. Retinal nerve fiber thickness, central retina thickness, and choroid thickness were measured in all eyes using optical coherence tomography. Results: Twenty-two (71%) of 31 the thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy patients included in the study were female and nine (29%) were male. Seventeen (56%) of the 30 control group members were female and 13 (44%) were male. Mean ages were 44.25 ± 16.92 years in the thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy group and 42.73 ± 16.2 in the control group. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic characteristics (p> 0.05). However, Hertel exophthalmometer and intraocular pressure measurements differed significantly between the thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy and control groups (p=0.0001). Mean and inferior retinal nerve fiber thicknesses were significantly lower in the thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy group (p
