Abstract

It is known that children with mental disabilities experience more physical and mental problems than children with normal development. Loneliness and exclusion from society can increase the frequency and severity of these problems. Therefore, determining loneliness levels and the factors that cause it is very important to prevent children with mental disabilities from experiencing mental problems. In this study, it is aimed to examine the loneliness levels of children with mild intellectual disability who are studying in mainstream and special education class and normally developing children. In the study carried out for this purpose, in the 2016-2017 academic year, in various districts of Istanbul. A total of 272 students were reached, including children with normal development, who continued their education in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades, as well as mainstreaming students with mild mental disabilities in the same schools and students in a special education class. Information about students’ number of siblings, and number of close friends were obtained. Students’ loneliness levels were also measured using the School-Based Loneliness Scale for Children. Intergroup comparisons were made using one-way ANOVA. As a result, it was observed that the mainstreaming class students experienced higher levels of loneliness than both special education class students and students with normal development. For mainstreaming education to reach its purpose, it was thought that measures should be taken to prevent the sense of loneliness based on the school.
