Abstract

Objective: It has been demonstrated that children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)have lower levels of self-esteem compared to healthy controls. There is paucity of data regarding the impact of stimulants on the self esteem of children with ADHD. We aimed to see whether methylphenidate had a profound effect on the self-esteem of children with ADHD. Method : Thirty-one children with a DSM-IV diagnosis of ADHD and who were on methylphenidate for 4-6 months were compared to 40 drug-free controls with a DSM-IV diagnosis of ADHD on the measures of self-esteem. Piers-Harris Self-esteem Scale for Children was used to assess self-esteem in the study and control groups. Results: There was a statistically significant difference on the measures of physical appearence and school performance/mental state subscales of the self-esteem scale. Subjects who were on methylphenidate had higher self-esteem on these peculiar areas. They also scored significantly lower on the anxiety measure of the scale compared to drug-free controls. Despite these findings, no significant difference was observed in the total scores of the self-esteem scale. Conclusions: Our study, in line with the previous studies, shows that ADHD children who are on methylphenidate perceive their school performance more positively than those subjects who do not use methylphenidate. We understand that methyphenidate has a positive impact on the self-esteem of ADHD children by recovering the attention deficit and cognitive problems and thereby enhancing the school performance.
