Abstract

There is a high risk for most of the psychiatric disorders during pregnancy and postpartum period. In recent years, this phenomenon has been emphasized and attemps to explain mechanism of etiology have been made. Many studies had been conducted on psychosis and mood disorder during pregnancy and postpartum period but there have been only few studies on anxiety disorders and their relationship with female reproductive functions. Early case reports have reported that pregnancy had a prophylactic effect for panic disorder whereas in postpartum period the risk and severity of panic symptoms increase. Later studies have emphasized that panic disorder could have different prognosis during pregnancy. When studies of the last 30 years have been overviewed, it has been evident that the effect of pregnancy on panic disorder may be quite different and the exacerbation of panic symptoms in postpartum period has important effects on the mental and physical health of the baby and the mother. Studies about the use of psychotropics during pregnancy and puerperium and about their teratogenity have been overviewed. The effect of anxiety that panic disorder causes on drug free mothers and their babies have been examined.
