Abstract

Malign mesothelioma is a rare cancer, which affects usually pleura and rarely peritoneum, pericardium and tunica vaginalis and has no standard treatment regimen. Purpose of the study was to evaluate our clinical practice on malign mesothelioma. We analyzed 10 patients retrospectively according to following criteria: Age, gender, performance status, initial symptoms, tobacco and asbestos history, localization, stage of disease, treatment regimen, results of therapy and complications. Mean age of the patients was 52.10±12.33 (37-74) years, 3 of them were female and 7 were male. Localization of disease was pleura in 8 patients and peritoneum in 2 patients. Four of the patients were at stage 4 and 6 were at stage 3. Surgical therapy, chemotherapy (high dose methotrexate+folinic acid) and radiotherapy were used for treatment.'At the end of the study, median progression time was 2 months (SE: 4; 95% Cfc 0-9) and median survival time was 8 months (SE: 3; 95% CI: 3-13). One-year survival rate was 41.1%. Using the high dose methotrexate+folinic acid was appropriate according to our study. Similar studies in the literature supports our results.
