Abstract

In this study, we aimed to compare effects of sevoflurane and desflurane in terms of hemodynamic parameters, recovery time and cognitive function in geriatric patients. Thirty-eight patients over 65 years old, in ASA status I, II, III were included in the study. Before the operation short cognitive test (SCT) was applied to all patients. During induction fentanyl, propofol and vecuronium were given. In group I, anesthesia was maintained with 3-6% desflurane and in group II 1-2% sevoflurane in a mixture of 50% NO2 and 50% O2. Heart rate, mean arteriel pressure SpO2 values were recorded before and after induction, $1^{st}$ , $5^{th}$ , $10^{th}$ , $15^{th}$ , $30^{th}$ minutes after intubation and recorded every 15 minutes during the operation. In the recovery room, post anesthesia recovery scores (PARS) and SCT scores of patients were recorded in the $1^{st}$ , $5^{th}$ , $10^{th}$ , $15^{th}$ , $30^{th}$ , $45^{th}$ and $60^{th}$ minutes. There was not any statistical difference between groups in terms of hemodynamic variables, Sp $O_2$ values, extubation time, SCT scores and PARS. We concluded that both agents could be used in geriatric patients.
