Abstract

Gastroenteritis has high mortality and morbidity and it is still an important health problem in underdeveloped and developing countries. In this study, we aimed to analyze our patients retrospectively who were diagnosed as acute gastroenteritis in our emergency room. One thousand forty nine patients were diagnosed as acute gastroenteritis between January 2000 and December 2003. Seven hundred thirty eight (69%) cases had no dehydration, 199 (19%) had mild, 78 (7.4%) had moderate and 34 (4.6%) had severe dehydration. Eight hundred twenty eight (78.9%) cases were followed up in our outpatient clinic, 119 (11.3%) were followed up in emergency room and 102 (9.7%) were hospitalized. Of these 102 patients, 6.9% of the cases did not have any dehydration, while mild, moderate and severe dehydration observed in 22.5%, 23.5% and 47.1% of the cases, respectively. Twenty-three (22.5%) of the patients had abnormalities in electrolytes, 7 (6.8%) patients had metabolic acidosis and 5 (4.9%) had metabolic alkalosis. One third of those patients had used antibiotics before coming to our hospital and 55 (53.9%) patients had coexistent infection. Mean breast-feeding time in children who were younger than two years was 4.8±3.8 months. Inpatients were followed up 5+3.3 days at the hospital. One (1%) patient died.

Hastalardan 828'i (%78.9) ayaktan takibe, 119'u (%11.3) müşahedeye alınırken,102 (%9.7) hasta servise yatırıldı. Yatırılan 102. hastanın %6.9'unda dehidratasyon yok iken, %22.5'inde hafif, %23.5'inde orta, %47.1'inde ağır dehidratasyon vardı. Hastaların 23'ünde (%22.5) elektrolit düzensizliği, 7'sinde (%6.8) metabolik asidoz, 5'inde (%4.9) metabolik alkaloz saptandı. Üçte birinde önceden antibiyotik kullanımı öyküsü, 55'inde (%53.9) gastroenterite eşlik eden başka bir enfeksiyon odağı mevcuttu. Anne sütü alım süresi 2 yaş altındaki çocuklarda ortalama 4.8±3.8 aydı. Yatan hastalarda ortalama tedavi süresi 5±3.3 gün idi. Bunlardan 1 'i (%1) eksitus oldu.
