Abstract

Background: Ankle arthrodesis is an option in the treatment of certain pathological conditions of the ankle. Even indica- tions expanded over the years basic principles have remained the same; correction of the deformity, pain relief and providing stability. In this study we evaluated the results of our patients that we made tibiotalokalkaneal arthrodesis with retrograde intramedullary nail. Methods: Between January 2007 and January 2012 seven pa- tients (2 males, 5 females; mean age 56.5±7.7; range 13 to 67 years) undergoing tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis with retro- grade intramedullary nail were included in the study and were evaluated retrospectively. Etiology of the 7 patients were ar- throsis after pylon fracture 42.8% (n=3), diabetic neurarthropa- thy 14.2% (n=1), foot drop 14.2% (n=1), arthrosis after bimal- leolar fracture in the basis of poliomyelitis 14.2% (n=1), Charcot joint secondary to calcaneal apophysis avulsion in the basis of congenital insensitivity syndrome 14.2% (n=1). Titanium retro- grade intramedullary nails were used in all patients. Results: Solid fusion was obtained average of 13±4.24 weeks (range 10 to 16 weeks) in all patients. Wound complications, infection, and implant failure were not observed. Preopera- tively AOFAS score was 18±2.1 (4-32) and increased to 58±1.8 (46-72). Conclusion: Intramedullary nail exhibits superior biomechani- cal properties and when compared with other implants it pro- vides dynamic compression capacity, high bending strength, increased rotational stability. In this study, although a relatively small number of patients, ankle arthrodesis wit retrograde intra- medullary nail is a reliable method with high rates of union and good functional results.

Has- taların etiyolojisine baktığımızda travma sonrası artroz %42.8 (n=3), diyabetik nöroartropati %14.2 (n=1), düşük ayak %14.2 (n=1), poliomiyelit zemininde bimalleolar kırık sonrası artroz %14.2 (n=1), doğuştan duyarsızlık sendromu zemininde kalkaneus apofiz avülsiyonuna sekonder Charcot eklemi %14.2 (n=1), pes ekino varus sekeli %14.2 (n=1) has- tada mevcuttu.
