Abstract

Background: The aim of the present study is to compare intraoperative cataract surgery complications in patients with and without pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES). Methods: One hundred and fifteen eyes of 104 patients who had undergone cataract surgery were evaluated retrospectively. Age, gender, cataract morphology, surgery types, and the incidence of intraoperative complications such as posterior capsule tear, vitreous loss, and zonular dialysis were compared between groups. Results: The study included 13 (54.2%) men and 11 (45.8%) women with PES. The mean age of the 24 patients with PES was 70.42 years and 62.06 years among the sixty patients without PES. In the PES group, 70% (n=19) of patients were over 65 years old, whereas only 43.2% of patients without PES were over 65 years old. The most common cataract type among the patients with PES was mature cataract (n=14, 51.9%). In the group without PES the most common cataract type was posterior supcapsular cataract (n=27, 30.7%). In both groups, phacoemulsification was the most common surgery type performed. Intracapsular cataract extraction was performed in two patients in the PES group. Complications were most common among the patients with mature cataracts (n=4, 40%). In the PES group, four cases (14.8%) developed intraoperative complications. Six cases (6.8%) developed the intraoperative complications in the group without PES. Zonular dialysis occurred in two patients (7.4%) in the PES group. Posterior capsule developed in 7.4% (n=2) of cases in the PES group and 5.7% of cases (n=5) in the group without PES. Conclusion: Intraoperative complications such as, zonular dialysis and posterior capsule tear occurred commonly in the PES group. Excellent surgical technique can dramatically decrease the rate of complications among patients with PES.
