Abstract

Although the idea that pain is not a symptom of Multiple sclerosis (MS) continues, many stud ies have confirmed that over half of MS patients complain of pain. Different mechanisms areassociated with causation of pain in MS. Most of the conditions causing pain can be prevent ed, eliminated or improved, and the remaining patients with chronic pain are managed withstrategies that are useful in approaching chronic pain in other situations. Pain managementrequires a multidisciplinary team approach. Nurses play an important role in this team. Nursesshould be aware of the type of pain and treatment options specific to MS patients and shouldprovide the care. The aim of this article is to discuss the nature, causes, treatment and nursingcare of the pain in MS disease in accordance with the current literature and to contribute tothe relevant literature.
