Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate 4 and 5. Grade students’ images of scientists. The study group was 4th and 5th grade students in four cities of Turkey in the 2010- 2011 academic years. The sample for this study consisted of 120 students who were randomly selected from eight public schools in four cities. As a data collection tool, the Draw-a-Scientist Test (DAST) was used. The data was analyzed by using a scale developed by Song and Kim (1999). Analyses of the students’ drawings indicated that most of the students had stereotypical scientist images - male scientist image with eyeglasses, wearing lab coats, individuals who work in laboratories with smiling faces – as explained by the other studies. Thus, it is a fact that children’s’ scientist images developed by the early years and do not change. It is suggested that it is an important need to research on the basic factors why children’s’ scientist images are usually stereotypical.
