Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine novice teachers’ teaching-and learning approaches and investigate whether there are meaningful differences between their teaching-learning approaches and gender, adoption of curriculum and application variables. Survey model was utilized in the study. Universe of the study consist of novice teachers who were newly appointed to schools in Trabzon city center and its districts in 2012-2013 academic year. Study was carried out with reached 245 teachers’ participation from the universe. In order to collect data “Teaching-Learning Approaches Scale” which was originally developed by Chan & Elliot (2004) and adapted to Turkish by Aypay (2011) was utilized. Mean scores, frequencies, percentages, independent groups t tests, one way variance analysis and Bonferroni tests were employed for data analysis. According to findings, it is determined that novice teachers have adopted the constructivist approach strongly compare to traditional approach in education. It was found that when the level of curriculum adoption and application increases novice teachers adoption level of constructivist teaching approach increases. Similarly, when the level of curriculum adoption and application decreases then novice teachers’ slip towards traditional approach. In the study it was also determined that there is no meaningful difference between teachers’ constructivist and/or traditional approaches and gender variable.
