Abstract

The aim of this research is to examine the proof evaluation skills of the prospective mathematics teachers and the arguments they have used during this process. The data of the research have been gathered at two stages. At the first stage, the Proof Evaluation Test developed by the researchers has been applied to 92 students who are students at two different universities. The responses given to the test by the students have been classified as strong and weak according to the structures of the arguments used. In the second stage, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 students who produced strong and weak arguments for eight different proofs for the rule that gives the sum of successive odd numbers during the proof evaluation process. Qualitative descriptive analysis method was used while analyzing the data. At the result of the research, it has been seen that the students mostly have been able to decide the correction of the proof but they have not defended their responses by using enough arguments.
