Abstract

The medical records of 3182 patients that had laparotomy in our clinic between January 2002 and January 2007 had been evaluated retrospectively. 80 patients (%3.8) had early potoperative relaparotomy. The most common causes were anastomotic leakage, mechanical or paralytic postoperative ileus, evantration or evisseration, bleeding into abdominal cavity or into the intestinal channel. Among 3182 patients, 32 (40%) of them had mortality and 11 (61.1%) of these were the patients who had a multiple relaparotomy. In conclusion, complications that leads to an early stage relaparotomy still have a great importance in our daily surgical practice. Despite the developing surgical techniques, the surgical materials and the posteoperative patient care, the mortality rates are still high. Early decision making is the most important entity in the treatment. The pateints need an early relaparotomy must be treated with most suitable suppertive treatment followed by the operation es early as possible.
