Abstract

In this study, the effects of infill to the performance of reinforced concrete structures that are designed according to the Turkish Earthquake Code are investigated. A 3D reinforced concrete structure with three storey is analysed with and without infill and the results obtained are compared. To determine the performance of the structure, capacity curve that defines the lateral load resisting capacity of the system is obtained. For this reason the structure is analysed for materially and geometrically non-linear under constant gravity and monotonic incremental lateral earthquake loads. Performance levels of the structures are obtained using nonlinear static analysis procedures (Capacity Spectrum Method and Displacement Coefficient Method) for low, moderate, high (design earthquake) and very high (that approximately represents the maximum earthquake of the region) seismic hazard level. Infill is modelled without opening (door, window etc.) and assumed to have compression failure behaviour. As a result of the analysis, the performance level of the structure is increased by the infill in frame and the structure behaviour depends on the location of the infill in the frame. In this study performances of the structures are evaluated by using the criterion in FEMA 356 and ATC 40. It’s thought that performance and damage level definitions and nonlinear static methods should also be given in Turkish Earthquake Code.
