Abstract

OBJECTIVE: In our study, we aimed to show the relation between the number of lymphatic vessels which detected by D2-40 with lymphatic vessel invasion, lymph node metastasis, tumour grade and clinical stage of the tumour. METHODS: In this study, 60 patients whom diagnosed with colorectal carcinoma in Department of Pathology between 2002-2009 are investigated. RESULTS: In our study, statistically significant difference was detected between the number of lymphatic vessels in normal colon mucosa and peritumoural and intratumoural areas (p=0,000, p=0,000). In the same way, statistically significant difference was detected between peritumoural and intratumoural lymphatic vessel counts (p=0,013). The number of intratumoural lymphatics was higher in cases whom were positive of having lymphatic tumour invasion (p=0,0043). The number of cases having tumour invasion in lymphatic vessels detected by D2-40 were higher than cases detected by using haemotoxilen-eosin (H&E) and the result was found to be statistically significant (p=0,001). No relation was observed between the average lymphatic numbers in intratumoural and peritumoural areas with grade, lymph node metastasis and stage (p > 0,05).CONCLUSION: In normal colon submucosa, intratumoural and peritumoural areas; the mean lymphatic vessel numbers which is detected by D2-40 show differences when comparing each other. Besides, the number of intratumoural lymphatics in cases detected of having lymphatic vessel invasion were higher than cases without lymphatic vessel invasion.
