Abstract

Iniencephaly is a rare type of neural tube defect characterized by hyper retroflexion of the head due to a spinal deformity bypassing the formation of the neck. Useful diagnostic characteristics of iniencephaly are occipital bone defects resulting in an enlarged foramen magnum, malformation and malfusion of the cervical and thoracical vertebrae, direct continuity of the chin with the chest forcing a stargazing posture of the face. Spinal retroflexion and anencephaly, Klippel-Feil syndrome, nuchal tumors such as teratomas, Jarcho-Levin syndrome, goiter and lymphangioma should be considered in the differential diagnosis. There are several case studies on radiological markers of iniencephaly, but very few articles are available on autopsy reports and differential diagnostics. In our study we used radiological techniques along with autopsy reports to show that in early gestational weeks ultrasonography plays an essential role in the diagnostics of iniencephaly and thus making early termination of the pregnancy possible.
