Abstract

Objective: In this retrospective study, we aimed to evaluatethe association between dark amniotic fluid detected in thegenetic amniocenthesis and perinatal outcome and karyotype results.Material and Method: Data about genetic amniocentesisperformed in Kanuni Sultan Suleyman Education andResearch Hospital, Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine, between July 2012 and April 2014 were obtained fromhospital medical records. Twenty-five cases were evaluatedin terms of karyotype test results and perinatal outcomes. Results: 838 genetic amniocentesis procedures were performed during this 22 month period. In our clinic darkamniotic fluid was detected in 25 (2.98%) cases. The indication of amniocentesis for 15 patients was increased riskin the prenatal screening for aneuploidy whereas 10 ofthem had major fetal anomalies as detected in ultrasoundevaluation. Medical termination of pregnancy was performed in 6 patients in whom major anomalies were detectedduring ultrasonographic examination and only one of thempregnancy was ended up with a birth of a live baby. One ofthe patients whose screening tests detected a risky pregnancy had an abortion following amniocentesis, and another patient had preterm membrane rupture at 30th week ofgestation. None of the other patients had any otherpregnancy-related complications. Conclusion: Bleeding at the early phase of pregnancy isthought to be the reason of dark amniotic fluid duringamniocentesis but the actual etiology is still unknown andcontroversies exist about negative association on pregnancy outcomes and karyotype test results.
