Abstract

The purpose of this study was determine the nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus in hemodialysis patients and personnel at the Hemodialysis Unit, Ankara University Hospital. For this aim,104 of hemodialysis patients and 16 staff members were investigated for nasal carriage of S. aureus. Nasal carriage of S. aureus was determined in 23 (22.1%) of patients. Methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) was isolated in 22 (95.6%) patients and methicillin-resistant (MRSA) in 1 (4.34%). Nasal carriage of MRSA was detected in one (6.25%) staff member. In conclusion, periodically screening of hemodialysis patients and personnel for nasal carriage of S. aureus and prevention of nasal carriage by- antibiotic treatment when necessary will considerably reduce the frequency of nosocomial infections in these patients.
