Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the presence of Legionella pneumophila in hotel water systems in Antalya, Turkey, between April and September 2002. Totally 106 water samples were collected; 19 of the samples were taken from cooling towers, 33 from hot water tanks, 27 from cold water tanks and 27 from city water. Selective culture method was used in the isolation of L. pneumophila and for serogroup determination, latex agglutination. Legionella pneumophila was isolated in six cooling towers and four hot water tanks of the hotels. Except the differences between city water-cooling tower and between cold water tank-cooling tower samples, L. pneumophila isolations were statistically significant. Of the 10 isolates, 3 isolates were determined to be in serogroup 1 and 7 isolates in serogroup 2-14. There was no statistically significant difference between the serogroups isolated. Legionella pneumophila, as it reproduces densely in water systems which are not serviced regularly, is a serious threat for human health: It is hoped that the findings of this study will draw professional attention to the problem.
